Before You Enter the Jungle

Stay inside the vehicle

Do not get out of the safari vehicle except at officially designated areas, as permitted by park rules and your guide.

Observe quietly

Keep voices low, avoid sudden movements and never call, feed or attempt to approach wildlife.

Follow your guide

The Legend of Bandhavgarh

A Forest of Tigers, History & Legacy

Set in the forested hills of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh is celebrated for its exceptionally high tiger density—among the highest in India—and for a landscape where wildlife and history are deeply intertwined. The reserve takes its name from the ancient Bandhavgarh Fort, steeped in local legend and centuries of history. The area was notified as a national park in 1968.

Ask your naturalist about Charger, the powerful male tiger whose bold presence made him a legend among visitors and forest-watchers, and Sita, the much-loved tigress whose life and cubs helped shape Bandhavgarh’s celebrated tiger lineage. Sita is often remembered as the “mother tigress” of Bandhavgarh and is widely credited in popular accounts with giving birth to 19 cubs.

Charger and Sita became more than famous tigers: they became part of the story people tell about this forest. Their legacy lives on in the memories of guides, naturalists and wildlife lovers—and in the continuing generations of tigers that make Bandhavgarh so special. In local storytelling, it can feel as though the spirit of Charger still roams these forests, reminding every visitor of the wild strength and character that define this place.

Your naturalist will share the stories, signs and secrets of the jungle along the way.
